Below is our calendar for July. I’m also reminding you about June’s Rent Event which will be this coming Sunday, June 26 2-4 p.m. at the Iron Bird Café. Please come if you can. Not only will you be helping the Center with your donations but will find that it is a relaxing way to spend a Sunday afternoon meeting new and old friends and enjoying the coffee and food at the Iron Bird Café. It is not necessary to buy anything at the Iron Bird Café though it would be nice to do so. They have donated the space to us without charge.
Richard Stone is a talented writer and his readings remarkable to listen to; his gifted guests in the past three months have been a poet, a writer and a singer. Avigdar Adams, Richard’s partner, is this month’s guest and many of you know what a wonderful voice he has!
Sunday, June 26, 2 to 4 p.m. “RENT EVENT”, Iron Bird Café, 1915 Fulton St. (just south of Divisadero), Richard Stone is hosting a monthly event to help meet the increased expenses of the Fresno Center for Nonviolence. This month Richard will be joined by his partner, Avigdar Adams, known in Rogue Festival circles for his singing of old ballads and folk songs in the tradition of Burl Ives and the early Joan Baez. We will also be raffling off one of Avigdar’s inimitable photographs. No admission is charged, but donations will be solicited to benefit the Center. Thursday, July 7 6-9 p.m. Cuba Caravan”. (potluck) The 22nd Pastors for Peace Caravan to Cuba will be at Margaret Hudson’s Barn and Garden, 4247 N. Thorne Ave. in Fresno for a free public presentation about the current situation in Cuba and the purpose behind the caravan. Merlinda Espinoza will be musical guest. Wednesday, July 13 at 3-3:30 p.m. on KFCF 88.1 On our “Stir it Up” monthly radio show Angela Price will be talking with her guest, Dr.Pakisa K.Tshimika, about recent news in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Dr. Tshimika is doctor of public health currently working as an associate executive for Mennonite World Conference. He is the executive director and founder of Mama Makeka House of Hope, a ministry to the DRC., a registered charitable organization founded in memory of his mother, to establish endowment funds for specific projects like hospitals and schools. Wednesday, July at 12 noon and 7 p.m. (potluck at 6:30 p.m.) The 2nd Wednesday film will be Captain Abu Raed. Jordanian director/screenwriter Amin Matalqa tells this tale of an elderly airline janitor mistaken for a pilot by the children of his neighborhood who does his best to inject a little imagination into their bleak reality. Abu Raed always wanted to see the world, yet the closest he ever got was talking to travelers as they walked through the airport and reading books about faraway places. The discarded captain’s hat he sports gives the local kids the impression that Abu was once a pilot, and seeing the grim realities that surround them all inspires him to play to their assumptions and try to make a difference in their lives.
