Wednesday, July 10 at 12 noon and at 7 p.m. (potluck at 6:30) Center for Nonviolence, 1584 N. Van Ness (SE corner Van Ness and McKinley).  Enjoy the humor, the gore and nuttiness of CATCH-22 as the Fresno Center for Nonviolence shows a classic funny movie for our hot sweltering activists to relax and enjoy watching.  The film is based on a satirical and somewhat historical novel by the American author Joseph Heller, first published in 1961, it’s set during World War II and is frequently cited as one of the great literary works of the twentieth century.

Captain John Yossarian is trying to end his tour of duty as a bombardier in World War II Italy, but every time he gets closer to reaching the required number of missions, “the brass” raises the number of flight missions needed to achieve this goal. He claims to be crazy and requests that he flies no more missions due to this, but by claiming to be crazy and unable to fly, he shows that he is rational and sane and must fly. Such is the ‘Catch 22”, the no-win situation Yossarian finds himself in as he’s mired in warfare and military bureaucracy with his fellow comrades in the absurdities of battle and day-to-day survival.

Video is 120 minutes. Wheelchair accessible and free to the public.  Not suitable for children or early teenagers. Call us at 559-237-3223 Mon-Fri 11-3 for more information.

Friday, July 12, at 6:30 p.m. at the College Community Congregational Church (5550 N. Fresno between Bullard and Barstow) This year’s Caravan to Cuba will be organized differently but the message that the blockade is immoral and unacceptable and must end is the same. Aid will still be taken to Cuba – medications and other portable aid to be carried in the caravanistas’ baggage. There will be no bus routes this time; but folks are encouraged to gather in cities across North America during Cuba Caravan Week, July 8 – 15. There will be a potluck meal, speaker(s) including Yesenia Martinez from Watsonville, and music. Caravanistas from Fresno, Dr. Leni Reeves, Gerry Bill and Sue Kern, will then participate in a major event in the Bay Area on July 15, fly to Mexico City for orientation, and then to Santiago de Cuba.

Caravanista Dr. Leni Reeves writes: “Santiago is a wonderful city, located on hills above a harbor like a little San Francisco. I was there in 2010 and it was remarkable for the friendliness of the people, their revolutionary spirit, and the vibrant music scene. It was the cradle of the revolution, where the attack on the Moncada Army Barracks took place. We’ll be able to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the start of the Revolution on July 26.  Santiago suffered very serious damage in Hurricane Sandy, which devastated eastern Cuba. More than 130,000 homes were lost along with schools, hospitals and other infrastructure; crops were totally destroyed. We will work with our Cuban partners to help reconstruct homes and buildings. It’s a different Caravan, and a very exciting change. If you can’t go with us, be sure to be there for our send-off on July 12, 6:30 PM, at College Community Congregational Church 5550 N. Fresno between Bullard and Barstow, and for our report-back afterward, when we’ll tell you all about it.”   This event is free and wheelchair accessible.

A reminder here: we are always glad to accept items that Gioia Frank (a Center volunteer) can sell on eBay or Etsy.  Gioia tells us that she hasn’t received any for a long time.  Yard sale items are great too as she can sell them in the Clovis Yard Sale thus avoiding packaging and shipping.  Contact her at center.for.nonviolence@gmail.com.
