Friday, October 13, 7 PM, “Music, Music, Music” at the Fresno Academy of Music, 1298 N. Wishon, (just north of Olive,) a concert to benefit the Fresno Center for Nonviolence, showing the talent of the Fresno Academy of Music. The program will feature Hearts on Fire, Fresno’s one and only Rock’n’Roll choir, soloists from the choir and students of the Academy. Performers range in age from youth to seniors, with music in a wide variety of styles. The Center, now in its 26th year, promotes peace and nonviolence through its programs and alliances with many other compatible groups. The Academy, in addition to sponsoring Hearts on Fire, offers instruction in vocalizing and several instruments, and welcomes new students. Advance ticket for $10 will be available at the Center, 1584 N. Van Ness from 11 AM to 3 PM, M-F, and at the Academy. Tickets at the door will be $15. Doors open at 6:30 PM. Fresno St. Hosted by Peace Fresno and Veterans For Peace (Chapter 180-Fresno). Colonel Wright spent twenty-nine years in the United States Army and Army Reserves and another sixteen years as a diplomat with the US State Department before finally saying “enough is enough” and resigning in protest on the eve of the invasion of Iraq on March 19, 2003 (one of three State Department officials to do so). After resigning from the government, she has been active in Veterans For Peace, the Korea Peace Network, and CODEPINK. Hear why Col. Wright is calling for immediate diplomatic talks to de-nuclearize the Korean Peninsula. Admission is FREE. ***

David Cay Johnston, guest speaker, has a long history covering Donald Trump, first reporting on the businessman’s Atlantic City dealings in the 1980s while at the Philadelphia Inquirer. In August, Johnston released “The Making of Donald Trump,” an unofficial biography that Johnston said was a culminating of his reporting. November 10, 2017, FILMWORKS, at 5:30 PM and 8:30 PM. The Fresno Center for Nonviolence will be co-sponsoring this video about a Lebanese drama in Syria, starring Palestinian actress Hiam Abbasss. In Syria (2017) A mother of three attempts to keep her family safe as war rages on the streets of Damascus and a sniper lies in waiting outside her home. Trapped inside she turns her flat into a safe harbor for her family and neighbors in an attempt to protect them. This video is the latest from Philippe Van Keeuw. This nerve-wracking study of live in Damascus won the Audience Aware at Berlinale. The film is 85 minutes long with English subtitles.
