Sunday, February 21st at 6:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 2672 E. Alluvial: the film “Nicotine Bees” will be shown. This film, directed by Kevin Hansen, gets to the truth of why honeybees of the world are in big trouble and why our food supply is in trouble with them. The answers are clear – and have been for several years: filmed on three continents to find out the real reasons bees are in catastrophic decline – and why people don’t want the real story to be told. The simultaneous global decline of honeybees threatens one third of our food supply – yet despite clear cut scientific data, especially from Europe, news reports still refer to the issue as a “mystery”. Come and see the film and find out why the “honeybees” don’t come back home. 53 minutes long. This film is being co-sponsored by the Fresno Center for Nonviolence and the Peace and Justice Coordinating Committee of the Unitarian Universalist Church. Wheelchair accessible. Free admission though donations would be welcome. For more information call the Center at (559) 237-3223 Mon-Fri 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
On Saturday, October 10th the Center for Nonviolence will be holding its annual book sale from 8-3 in the parking lot SW corner Olive and Van Ness. We are hoping, of course, that not only will you donate books to sell, but will attend the sale and buy some more books! We are a bit behind asking for books this year, so would really appreciate it if you would take a look at your book shelves and see which ones you are willing to give up! Always difficult I know to part with ‘good friends’.
You can bring the books to the Center at 1584 N.Van Ness – or if that is not possible, let us know and we’ll if someone can come and pick them up. Also, we do take CDs, DVDs and books on tape – but not textbooks or video cassette tapes. (DISNEY VHS TAPES OKAY)
Oh, pass this on to any friend or relative that may have books too!
This is a reminder of the Center’s 23rd Anniversary (yes, 23 years old). We will be celebrating our birthday on Saturday, June 20 at 4 p.m. at the Unity Church, 315 W. Shields (between Fruit and Arthur). It is a potluck so bring something to share if you can, we’ll have Avigdar Adams singing with Jean Hayes accompanying him on the piano, our annual Way of Peace Awards – come and congratulate Teresa Castillo, Connie Young, Rev. Chris Breedlove and members of FIYA (Fresno Immigrant Youth Action). Our M.C. will be the incomparable Jim Grant. And……..a Silent Auction which has lots of really good bargains.
After a late start because of the beautiful rain, we set up our Center booth with the help of Gerry, Ron and Gioia. We had no trouble attracting kids (and adults!) to our coloring a butterfly project – and what great butterfly artists emerged. The reward was a packet of milkweed seeds to plant in their gardens and education about the plight of the Monarch butterfly. A big thank you to Kay Pitts for painting butterflies on the corners of 20 poster boards and for all the work that Gioia did on this activity. We plan to put the artwork up at our 23rd Anniversary on June 20th!
I took lots of photos of butterfly artists and plan to put them all on our website somehow. Facebook too. Stay tuned.
We still have quite a few packets of milkweed seeds left – so if you want some, let us know.
